Summary of Sriwijaya Air Flight SJ182 Incident

     SJ182 flight is an Indonesian domestic flight scheduled departure from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang (also known as Jakarta International Airport) to Supadio International Airport, Pontianak. On around 2:40 p.m. local time, the aircraft disappeared from the radar and reported the status of the aircraft was "free-falling" from around 10,000 ft (around 3000 meters) to the Java Sea in less than 1 minute. The incident happened 4 minutes right after took off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. There was no distress call ("mayday" or "PAN-PAN") captured before the flight went lose contact.

    Several local fishermen witnessed the incident. According to one of the local fisherman, the aircraft crashed just 14 m from his location. He stated that the aircraft exploded in the mid-air and a piece of the aircraft that was on fire fell into the sea with "shards of a kind of plywood" almost hit his ship. Besides that, citizens of the Thousand Islands (near where the incident happened) heard two times of explosion. The was also report made by eyewitnesses from Laki Island.


    The first report about the crash was made at 2.30 p.m. local time at Thousand Island, in which a fisherman stated that a plane exploded and crashed into the sea. The first rescue team was formed at around 4.00 p.m. by eyewitnesses coordinated with firefighters.

    According to Air Marshal Bagus Puruhito, the head of the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), the crash site was located 11 nmi (20 km or 13 mi) from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Body parts, fragments of clothing, electronics personal belongings, wreckage and aviation fuel was founded from the sea near the Thousand Islands.

    On 10 January 2021, signals from the aircraft have been detected by the naval forces and the exact coordinate of the crash site has been pinpointed by Indonesian Navy. A lot more wreckage and body has been founded. 2 black boxes has been founded on the same day.


    The NTSC (National Transportation Safety Committee) was immediately notified of the incident with assistance from BASARNAS. According to the investigation team, the aircraft was signifying in good condition in maintenance without any fault or damage. The flight was delayed more than 30 minutes from the schedule due to bad weather, not because of the aircraft status or condition. Analysis by the Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), no extreme weather condition presented during the time in that region. According to the representative from Sriwijaya Air, the decline in the aircraft's air resistance due to the age of more than 25 years may be the cause of the incident.
